Happy Birthday from the winter’s snowiest place in the U.S.A. : (Surprise!) Baltimore, Maryland.
You were thinking Anchorage? Buffalo? Aspen, maybe? Hah! They’re tropical compared to Charm City. According to goldensnowglobe.com, Baltimore, with yesterday’s second blizzard of the week, pulled ahead of Syracuse to stand alone atop the snow heap. I’m so proud.
This winter, 6 feet, 7 inches of snow has fallen at Baltimore-Washington International Airport. This is four times as much as we get in a typical winter here. And it’s still early February- the height of our snow season.
According to the National Weather Service, this the most snowfall Baltimore’s seen in one winter since they began keeping track of these things in 1893. It shatters the previous snowfall record set in 1995-96.
The 1995-96 season is one that I remember well. My wife was very pregnant with our second child during that snow-filled winter. I had recurring nightmares that I would have to deliver the baby myself because the plows couldn’t get to us in time.
Mercifully, the skies (and roads) were clear the night my wife finally went into labor, and we were blessed with an uneventful trip to the hospital and delivery. Our son was born on February 13, 1996. But by the time we were ready to take him home, it had begun snowing again. I ventured cautiously from the hospital grounds with my precious cargo onboard.
When I finally pulled the car onto our street, I was absolutely elated to see that some thoughtful soul had shoveled a path to our front door. And I’ve never forgotten that act of kindness.
Now, 14 years later, that little baby is as tall as me and he’s the one out there shoveling the path to our door. Happy birthday, my son. It’s another winter to remember here in Baltimore.

I’ve wondered about the new gym name. That’s the same name as a bath house in San Francisco- not that there’s anything wrong with it.
My back is sore because the machine at the gym that replicates shoveling snow is broken. My gym is only $9.99 per month, and it’s name rhymes with Funk – so they aren’t all that good about fixing their equipment.
Unfortunately, they’re too young to shovel. But not too young to operate a snow blower. After you fill it with gas and pull the cord, they should be able to take it from there. Also, I thought you went to the gym every day. Isn’t snow shoveling just like a normal workout to you?
Why is your back sore?
We got SNOW!! A wopping 3 inches. Atlanta shut down….I got plenty of milk. Happy b-day to Nicholas from the ATL Torinos.
Very Nice Woody! Do you know how young is too young to shovel 4 feet of snow? 6 years? 10 months? My back is aching, and I’m sick of my brood just watching me shovel, from the comfort of the warm living room.
I heard there was snow in Georgia today. Snow is way better than rain. You can sled in it, ski, have snow ball fights, build igloos, etc.
I miss snow, from a distance. Up close and in it, it’s whole different story. If it makes you feel any better, we’ve had more rain in the last year then we’ve had in the previous 5 years…….doesn’t help much, does it.
A new girl started in my office just before Thanksgiving. She’s from Pittsburgh. She has a terrible towel hanging on her cubicle wall, directly across from my cubicle. She moved “south” to get away from the snow. She’s Greek. I think “snow” in Greek must mean “family.”
